We are currently looking to employ First Year Apprentice Diesel Mechanic at the following depots:

  •  Blacktown

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Work alongside trade qualified staff to keep our fleet moving whilst learning a trade 
  • Assist in maintaining a fleet of vehicles including the latest models and innovative vehicle technology
  • Participate in an extensive training program and continual support
  • Work locally and support your community
  • Full-time position with employment to commence in January 2021

Our workshop staff play a critical role within the business to ensure our ever-evolving fleet of vehicles are continually maintained to the highest standard to keep our staff and passengers safe out on the road.

Busways provides ongoing training and support to employees based on their level of experience to enable you to meet our standards.

The successful applicants will be entering into a 4-year training contract within a secure employment environment. You will receive full ‘on the job’ and TAFE training as well as guidance and assistance from a mentor with solid mechanical experience.

The Job

Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, this role requires you to have a mature and professional approach with excellent communication skills. Your main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Under Supervision, learning the skills to be part of the Workshop team
  • Perform minor repairs and service of vehicles and equipment, in a timely manner, within your skill level and experience under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson
  • Undertaking a Nationally recognised training program as a Diesel Mechanic
  • Complete all units of the Apprenticeship to the required standards and within the required time frame(s)
  • Attend all required TAFE classes under the guidance of your mentors, supervisor and teachers
  • Adhering to all Work, Health & Safety requirements whilst performing work duties

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for this role, you will need to possess:

  • A completed School Certificate or High School Certificate
  • Good Maths, Science and English skills
  • A genuine interest in a diesel mechanic career
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong focus on safety in the workplace
  • A positive ‘Can Do’ attitude, self-motivated, conscientious and eager to learn
  • The ability to take direction and show initiative
  • Current driver’s licence or ability to obtain once you meet the minimum eligibility requirements
  • A strong work ethic which means you will be reliable, punctual and honest and committed to completing your trade qualification

Role Description

AGT has teamed up with one of Sydney’s leading suppliers & repairers of marine and industrial diesel engines & generators. We are on the lookout for an enthusiastic, mechanically minded 1st Year Marine Mechanical Apprentice to complete Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology.

Our partner has a fully equipped workshop that is able to handle large engine rebuilds, overhauls, re-powering, new installs along with regular ongoing servicing and repairs. As you progress through the apprenticeship you will accompany field technicians in a fleet of mobile workshop vehicles to travel to sites.

The company you’ll work with does a lot of work within the Marine field, such as working on some of the Royal Australian Navy ships. You must be willing to travel interstate and even overseas as part of your employment. This role requires true passion & the ability to also work different hours & days.


Are you?

  • A person with a passion and aptitude for engines and things mechanical
  • Someone able to work in a logical and organised manner
  • Someone able to meet the physical needs of the role
  • A person who works confidently and safely with tools and machinery
  • Totally committed to completing a marine mechanical apprenticeship
  • Willing to travel away from home, for several weeks at a time

Some of the duties include:

  • Following safe work practices and learning to work with a variety of hand and power tools
  • Diagnosing, servicing and repairing varying range of small to medium size diesel engines/transmissions across marine, industrial and mining industries
  • Maintenance, repair and overhauling jobs on engines & engine components in the workshop
  • Maintenance of workshop machinery and equipment
  • Maintain a clean workshop environment
  • Be a team player: support colleagues and superiors, share information, contribute to a friendly work atmosphere

Candidate Requirements:

  • Must be Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must have current Drivers Licence. (Minimum P1 or close to obtaining)
  • Neat & tidy appearance (company uniform provided)
  • Time efficient
  • Motivated and eager to learn
  • Physically fit – to carry heavy objects
  • Must be able to travel interstate or overseas, for several weeks at a time
